REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals )
It is a European Union regulation dating from December 18, 2006. This helps to improve the protection of human health and the environment from various risks that can be posed by chemicals. It also encourages alternative methods for the hazard assessment of substances in order to reduce the number of tests on animals.
REACH applies to almost all the chemical substances that are present in electronic and electrical equipment. REACH requires manufacturers to have a detailed knowledge of the substances they use or are present in their products.
Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs), a subset of REACH, are the most hazardous and harmful substances which are highly regulated. The products containing SVHCs may not be able to receive authorization if a safer alternative exists in the industry. The SVHC list keeps growing with substance addition every six months (June/July and December).
As of January 2021, importers and producers of articles in the European Union are required to provide detailed information on the presence of SVHCs within their products to the SCIP notification database.
